J-TOWN

“Now is the time to take on new challenges” says vice chief director Terade Masahiro of the Tsukiji Outer Market Shopping District Association as he works on various plans to cope with today’s tough times. Tsukiji Market’s well-known shops have come together, each providing one ingredient to create a special take-out bento lunch box. This segment documents the market’s initiatives to develop new business models amidst the coronavirus crisis.

J-STREET

The second installment of J-Street featuring “Yokocho,” or street alleys from photographer Yamaguchi Masahiro’s photobook: Tokyo Back Street Alleys. This time, we’ll introduce the “Harmonica Yokocho” alley in Kichijoji, Tokyo. It is lined with almost a hundred shops, bars, diners, fish, pickle stores, fashion boutiques in the daytime and sake bars at night. This time, CATCH JAPAN host Maxwell Powers visits Harmonica Yokocho and talks with locals about the effects of the coronavirus on the area.

Japan has 34 national parks throughout the nation. They are characterized by rich natural landscapes transforming through the seasons, and the people living within the park grounds have learned to coexist with nature. This segment will be the prologue to a series featuring the national parks of Japan.
