Naomi Komoto is a bereavement clean out expert. Her business, based in Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, specializes in disposing of and sorting out possessions of the deceased and cleaning out their homes. Going through the belongings of a deceased loved one is an emotionally and physically demanding process for the surviving family members. As Japan’s population ages and family structures change, more people are seeking help for this task. This is where Naomi steps in. She guides her clients, the bereaved families, through the process and prioritizes their wishes. Her cheerful and upbeat way of working helps her clients move forward. We take a look at some of Japan’s current social issues - an aging population, solitary deaths, and vacant homes - through the eyes of one woman.
