Spirit of Okinawa

50 Years Since its Reversion

Aired: June 10, 2022 (UTC)

Information

On May 15th 1972, the United States relinquished administrative control of Okinawa to Japan. The passing of half a century since this occasion is eyed as a prime opportunity to convey the pulse of the islands, the energy of their people, and the limitless possibilities held by Okinawa with the coming of a new era.

In the period from the early 15th to 19th centuries, Okinawa flourished as the Ryukyu Kingdom, and by mixing Japanese and Asian cultures, the region developed its own unique performance, arts, and craftwork. Distinctly American cultural elements also remain from the 27-year period of U.S. control that began in 1945. After Okinawa’s return to Japan, it enjoyed strong economic development, transforming into one of the country’s most renowned tourism destinations.

In this program, we introduce the current state of the culturally unique, nature-rich, and increasingly cosmopolitan Okinawa 50 years since its return.
