The global risk posed by large-scale natural disasters is escalating each year. Recently, the Japanese city of Sendai—one of the areas ravaged by the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011—hosted the Third UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, which included the Symposium on Disaster Risk Reduction and International Cooperation. This two-part program will introduce and discuss the issues raised during the course of the symposium.
